Jubilee...and Valletta.

(photo taken from: http://www.mydestination.com/malta/restaurants/11344/cafe-jubilee )

I love, love, love this fascinating little franchise. This place does not only make the best steak and ale pie on the island, but it also holds such a fascination for me. It is a collection of vintage pin ups, old bicycles, posters, upside down old tables, old newspapers, all stuck to the wall of this little charming cafe'...

I have just arrived home from a lovely (although short) evening with my even lovelier boyfriend, at Valletta. I love Valletta by night, it possesses an aura of mystery surrounded in the myriads of old buildings and alleyways. In many ways it reminds me of Edinburgh, my most favourite city, in the whole wide world. (And in many ways Valletta is very similar to Edinburgh! I only found out a couple of weeks ago that there are vaults under Valletta which cover almost all the city, just like Edinburgh! )

The thing about our capital city is, we take it for granted. I know I do, anyway. We pass the same old buildings every other day, and we never actually stop to appreciate the historical (and aesthetic) value of such places. There are so many precious buildings, and little museums spread all over the city- and these are not adequately advertised. Every little street has its own story to tell, its own part in the making of our rich, rich history. (Additionally, there are so many cute and cosy wine bars and cafes hidden in the less popular streets!)

So, next time you are in the Maltese capital city, slow down, take a look around you. You might find something new or learn something interesting. As a nation we need to start loving our heritage, for it is a pretty awesome (excuse the cliche') one.

Happy New Year

"A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write" Virginia Woolf; A Room of One's Own.

The pen is mightier than the sword. If you love and believe in something, fight for it. If you are shunned by society because of it, fight more. There is nothing grander in the world than to believe in something, and to be able to fight for it. I am not talking about violence.Violence results from hatred, and to believe in something generates only hope. There is no hatred in the mass that believes in a better society.

The weapon you possess is in you. Your abilities and your courage are your own personal weapons. They keep you going when the going gets tough. Your abilities are the tools for your own revolution. Hold your head up high, and never be afraid to show who you really are. People will respect you. Others might also hate you, but to be loved by everyone is impossible.

"I have been both loved and hated in return. I would never  have it otherwise. To inspire only respect is to fail. Respect is a form of indifference" Ian Hamilton, Stone of Destiny.

Happy New Year ...if you believe in something this year, make it happen. (or write about it, like I do!) :)
